As people are enjoying the beginning of summer and making preparations for vacations, scientists are asking, is it actually too hot for summer? On Monday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric - Administration reported that this past May was one of the hottest ever.
According to the official NCDC website, the organization looks at temperatures at the Earth’s surface.
May’s average temperature was 59.93 degrees Fahrenheit. That was higher than the old record set four years ago, according to the Associated Press. It wasn’t just citizens in the U.S. who noted the rise in temperatures.
May was particularly hot in parts of Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Spain, South Korea, and Australia. In the United States, California noted a change, averaging a full five degrees above normal over the first five months of this year.
Scientists noted an uncommonly hot spring. May was 1.33 degrees warmer than the 20th century world average, leading scientists to think that global warming is a long-term trend.
The NOAA also considered El Nino, when looking at climate change. According the way that they predict climate changes, El Nino conditions will develop during the Summer of 2014.
