Glenn Close awarded Sundance Film Festival Institute’s Vanguard Leadership Award

Glenn Close was honored with the Vanguard Leadership Award during the Sundance Institute Celebration in NYC on June 4. Celebrities came out to recognize Close for “her distinguished career in entertainment and advocacy of independent film.”

The Sundance Institute honors artists whose stories “shape and reflect our world.” The benefit acknowledged actors and directors involved in the independent film community. It also raised money and awareness for the programs available for filmmakers all year through the Sundance Institute.

Glenn Close has appeared in several films at the Sundance Film Festival. She is an Emeritus Trustee of Sundance Institution and a Creative Advisor in its Labs for independent filmmakers. She has worked with aspiring filmmakers, including Quentin Tarantino before he made Reservoir Dogs.

In a videotaped message screened at the benefit, Robert Redford said of the famous actress, “When you look at the roles she’s played, they’re so diverse it can blow your mind,” according to Variety.

Close has appeared in seven films that premiered at Sundance, and said she has a “passionate and lifelong commitment to independent film,” according to Variety. Close was surrounded by friends at the event, including Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio and Bob Balaban.

The star studded event had a number of A-list celebrities on their host committee, including Sally Field, Kenneth Cole, and Karen Lauder, according to the Sundance website.

The benefit also honored Damien Chazelle, a Harvard University alum. Chazzelle’s recent work, Whiplash, won at the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in Dramatic Competition. He was presented with the Vanguard Award.

The Sundance Institute Celebration was held on June 4 beginning at 7PM at Stage 37 located at 508 West 37th Street.
