Drones banned in National Parks

The National Park Service is taking measures to ban drones from their 84 million acres of public lands and waterways.

Drones have harassed both wildlife and visitors of the National Parks. Jonathan Jarvis, the park service’s director said that he doesn’t want the drones causing the birds to move from their nests or hovering over rock climbers.

"Imagine you're a big wall climber in Yosemite working on a four-day climb up El Capitan, and you're hanging off a bolt ready to make a (difficult) move, and an unmanned aircraft flies up beside you and is hovering a few feet from your head with its GoPro camera running," Jarvis said in an interview, according to the Associated Press. “Think about what that does to your experience and your safety."

Jarvis said that he would sign a policy memorandum that directs the superintendents to write rules about the use of drones in their parks. Drones have already been banned in some national parks, according to The Washington Post. Grand Canyon in Arizona and Zion in Utah are two of the parks that have banned drones.
