Clint Eastwood’s film version ofJersey Boys is getting mediocre reviews. Though critics loved the stage play about Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, they are thinking less favorably of the film.
According to Adam Lee Davies of Little White Lies, “This is an age-old rise-and-fall story that we’ve all seen a hundred times before, so maybe embalming it in molasses is not the way to go. Yet Clint is so committed to ‘staying classy’ that his direction drains the life out of what could and should have been a bouncy, rambunctious music industry romp.”
Reviews like this might be a surprise for people who have always loved the hit Broadway musical. The story begins with Frankie Castelluccio who appears at the beginning of the film at age 16. He is supported by a mob boss Gyp DeCarlo, played by Christopher Walken and Tommy DeVito, played by Vincent Piazza. The movie features songs like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and “Walk Like a Man.”
Jordan Hoffman of Film.com. wrote” While the Broadway production may very well have plenty of pop and polish (I’ve never gone; I leave my visiting cousins at the door) Clint Eastwood’s soporific film version is a defiantly dull retelling of the band’s history.”
Jersey Boys opens on Friday.
