Los Angeles Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw extended his streak of consecutive innings without giving up a run to 21 1/3 with eight scoreless in the Dodgers’ 2-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.
In his first start since his no-hitter last week, he yielded six hits struck out eight. He issued one walk, which came in the fifth inning to left fielder Alex Gordon. This walk is only the second free pass Kershaw has given to a lefty hitter all season, reports the Associated Press.
“He just pitched a great game,” Royals’ manager Ned Yost said in his postgame press conference on MLB.com. “We had two opportunities with two outs to make something happen, but the slider got us.”
The Royals left two runners stranded in both the fourth and seventh innings.
Kershaw’s run support came in the first and ninth innings.
Third baseman Justin Turner led the game off with a triple to deep right. He came around to score on an RBI fielder’s choice ground out by first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.
In the ninth, Gonzalez led the inning off with a walk. After a strike out to outfielder Scott Van Slyke and a base hit by catcher A.J. Ellis, Andre Ethier stepped into the batter’s box as a pinch hitter. He smacked a single to center field, scoring Gonzalez.
Closer Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth, recording two strikeouts and picking up his 23rd save.
For the Royals, starter Danny Duffy went six innings, allowing one run on four hits and fanning five.
First baseman Eric Hosmer and third baseman Danny Valencia each recorded two hits, according to ESPN.
The two teams wrap up the three-game series on Wednesday.
