Results from a study done by the Environmental Working Group health research organization in Washington D.C. proves that fortified foods, such as cereal, can contain an overdose of vitamins which can harm the health of many, especially young children.
According to News8000 , The study revealed that several million children eat cereal each morning that contains a dangerous amount of vitamins due to labels that were intended for adult intake.
The high level of vitamins in the foods can in turn cause several health problems to everyone, but children are more susceptible because of their body size. An excessive amount of vitamin A can lead to liver complications or skeletal problems. It can also cause hip fractures and even harm the fetus of a mother to be, the Environmental Working Group reported.
The overdose in vitamin intake is linked to several causes. One reason that children are receiving too much nutrients is due to the fact that the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not updated its nutritional labels since 1968 and those labels were made for adults, not children. Another factor is the marketing propaganda that comes along with foods, as well as many parents not being aware of the dangers that come with vitamin overdose.
The FDA is currently in the process of updating its food labels.
