Acclaimed actress Ruby Dee is dead at age 91. The actress who was known for her work on the stage, radio, television, and film was with her family and friends when she died of natural causes in her home in New Rochelle on Wednesday.
Nora Davis Day told the Associated Press, “We have had her for so long and we loved her so much. She took her final bow last night at home surrounded by her children and grandchildren. We gave her our permission to set sail. She opened her eyes, closed her eyes and away she went."
Dee was nominated for an Oscar nomination at age 83 for her work in American Gangster. She also won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work in the miniseries, Decoration Day. She was also nominated for her work in Lincoln and Roots: The Next Generations. Dee was in the movie, Do the Right Thing. According to Reuters, she was raised in Harlem.
Dee was also a civil rights activist, who was born on October 27, 1924 in Cleveland, OH. She is survived by her three children, Nora, Hasna, and Guy, and seven grandchildren.
