Summer movies are becoming a hit with fans, and this summer’s 22 Jump Street had a great opening weekend, with box office numbers at $60 million.
"When a studio has ultimate confidence in something, they will put it in that gladiator arena that is the summer season," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak, according to the Associated Press. "A sequel in the summer is like graduating."
In the movie that is becoming a hit with the college crowd, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are undercover officers who go on a mission to bust a drug dealer. The bungling comedy also stars Ice Cube, Peter Stomare, and Wyatt Russell.
The first film, 21 Jump Street, opened to $36 million. It ended with $138 million in domestic grosses, and $201 million worldwide, according to Forbes. 21 Jump Street opened in 2012.
22 Jump Street is one of the many sequels for summer movie fans. It battled other popular summer sequels, including How to Train Your Dragon 2 that opened to $50 million the first week. Maleficient was third in the top box office numbers for the week.
