This week’s column is filled with action mixed with crime, comedy and other cinematic elements. Kingsmen: The Secret Service is an actioner where a veteran secret agent takes a rookie under his wing. Guardians of the Galaxy is a science fiction adventure where in space a pilot is hunted down after stealing a coveted orb and Life of Crime is a crime comedy where a wealthy husband refuses to pay the ransom on his kidnapped wife. All three films have plenty of action with the essentials of varying genres mixed in such as comedy, science fiction and thriller. In addition, all three have serious A-list stars in their casts, which is sure to bring throngs of moviegoers to their local theaters when these flicks open. Moreover, audiences are sure to be drawn to one or all of these movies, given their varying film genres.
Kingsmen: The Secret Service is an action thriller where a seasoned secret agent (Firth) takes a young and cocky upstart under his wing in order to groom him. Starring Mark Hamill, Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong and Michael Caine, the trailer shows Firth finding this young brash petty kid and schooling him in how to be a secret agent. Of course, things go wrong and some comedy is intermixed amidst all of the pulse-pounding action. Seeing Firth playing deadpan serious is delightful as usual and this movie is sure to bring in fans of his to see him do what he does best. It opens in theaters on Friday, October 24.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a science fiction action adventure flick based on the on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It takes place in space and an American pilot is chased down after stealing a sought-after orb. It stars a barrage of Hollywood heavyweights such as Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Benicio Del Toro, John C. Reilly and Glenn Close. The trailer shows an American pilot (Pratt) being the subject of a manhunt by the villainous Ronan after stealing an orb that he desires. The pilot must make an uneasy alliance with a group of misfits to save his own life. The trailer is froth with incredible special effects as aliens galore cross paths with this arrogant pilot as he fights to stay alive. A surefire hit for moviegoers who love comics that are turned into movies, it opens in theaters on Friday, August 1.
Life of Crime is a crime comedy based the novel “The Switch” by Elmore Leonard. Starring Jennifer Aniston, Tim Robbins, Mos Def, Isla Fisher and Will Forte, the plot revolves around a wealthy husband (Robbins,) who will not pony up the ransom when his wife (Aniston) is kidnapped. The trailer shows Robbins’ character, Frank Dawson as a philanderer, who wanted to get rid of his wife, Mickey, but two uncoordinated thugs beat him to it. What follows is a hilarious tale filled with mishaps, miscommunications and pure comedy. This laughfest opens in theaters on Friday, August 29.
