Top 10 BET Awards Hosts

Summer will be here shortly. You know what that means. It is time for the 2014 BET Awards! Though black entertainers win awards at other shows, some critics believe that these awards shows are bias. Remember Kanye West and Taylor Swift…

Need I say more? Though that was not the best way to handle the situation, you can usually guess who will win a Moon Man at the MTV Awards. To celebrate African American and other minorities’ achievements, the BET network started this show on June 19, 2001. This year Chris Rock is hosting the 13th award show.

Since the awards shows birth, many comedians and entertainers have hosted the show. Since Chris Tucker hosted last year, it only seems logical to give Chris Rock a chance. Since the shows started only 10 hosts have opened the show. A couple of them hosted a few years. The question is, who did it better?

10. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith
Though there is a lot of controversy about their children in the news lately, These two hosted the BET Awards on June 28, 2005. The two set the show of with a parody of the popular movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Will Smith has comedic roots. Of the two, Jada Pinkett Smith is more serious. Regardless, she was able to hold her grown with her funny husband.

9. Steve Harvey and Cedric the Entertainer
Two of comedies royalties co-hosted the first and second BET Awards. These Kings of Comedy did not have predecessors for this show. They laid the ground work and paved the way for the other hosts. In hindsight, these two were perfect for the job. They were seasoned, but relevant comedians. Both are still staying active today through the radio, television, and movies.

8.D. L. Hughley
D. L. Hughley hosted the show on June 24, 2008. At this point, viewers have seen Steve Harvey & Cedric the Entertainer, Damon Wayans, and Monique. That is four successful comedians. Three of those heavy hitters hosted numerous times. He didn’t let that get the best of him. In fact, he touched on national news and politics.

It is a fact that the Wayans brothers are an hilarious family. It is only right that one of the 1st generation brothers host the show. Since Damon is older, he can appeal to a wide audience. Keep in mind, the BET Awards covers a wide age group.

It is nice to see that Samuel Jackson still does not take himself too seriously. He is a very successful black actor who has done a wide range of lead and supporting actor roles. Yet, he can still come home and keep the crowd entertained.

5. Queen Latifah
Queen came into the show with her Jersey swag. She kept the crowd lively, and was not afraid to humorously call out artist that were in attendance and absent from the awards show. She sang, she rapped, and she kept the punch lines coming. As the 2nd female to host the BET Awards Show, she did a great job.

Sometimes when comedians work on movies, they lose their touch with a live crowd. Hosting any awards show is an honor that comes with a lot of pressure. It is live and you are performing in front of your peers. Plus, it is live. Not only does the crowd watch you fall on your face, but you have people at home criticizing your jokes as well. Like many of the greats that have hosted the show, he did not disappoint.

When Michael Jackson passed in 2010, Jamie Fox truly rouse to the occasion. The untimely death of the King of Pop resorted in a completely different program. Instead of having the crowd in mourning, he encouraged people to celebrate his life. Most people will not directly touch billions of people’s lives through their music. He did, that is not something to cry about. A long with jokes, he danced and sang in remembrance of Michael.

You have to give credit where credit is due. Kevin Hart is very successful, because he takes advantage of opportunities he is presented with. In fact, The Real Husbands of Hollywood is booked for a third season; because it started off as a skit in the 2011 BET Awards.

Though she has not hosted the show for several years, she hosted the BET Awards more than anyone on her list. Monique held it down for three years. Each time, she gave a flashy stunning performance of a recent Beyoncé single. She proved that voluptuous women are beautiful and can do anything a slender woman can.
After two seasons of Steve Harvey and Cedric the Entertainer, Monique opened the show upset with Jada Pinkett Smith for taking her role in Matrix Reloaded.
