The Libertines, headed by guitarists and vocalists Carl Barât and Pete Doherty, are set to reunite for a one-off show in London’s Hyde Park. With two critically acclaimed festival appearances in 2010, their first reunion from disbanding in 2004, the current reunion is said to be all about the money.
In an interview with NME Doherty, probably best known for his drug addiction and tumultuous relationship with Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse, compared The Libertines’ record deal signing to their current reunion, stating, “It's completely in the spirit of the band to play Hyde Park for the money!”
With limited success stateside, The Libertines found success on home-ground with their debut album Up the Bracket and their self-titled follow up which reached number one on the UK charts. The band broke up in 2004 due to Doherty’s cocaine and heroin addiction, and constant battles with Barât, but they put differences aside and reunited in 2010 to play the Reading Festival and Leeds Festival.
The Independent recently spoke to Barât and he stated there is also a possibility of some new songs at the Hyde Park show as well.
The Libertines are scheduled to play the Hyde Park British Summer Time concert series on July 5.
