Spike Lee to turn film ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ into TV series

It was announced this week that independent filmmaker Spike Lee is strongly considering turning his 1986 picture She’s Gotta Have It into a half hour comedy series.

The Associated Press reports Lee was encouraged by wife Tonya Lewis to turn his breakthrough project into a TV Show for years. The 57 year-old pitched a contemporary version of the story to Showtime, and is currently writing the pilot.
Lee commented in Thursday interview, "I've always been confident in my ability, but it's not to be my decision alone. All I can do is write the best pilot I can write. Hopefully, God willing, the people and powers-to-be at Showtime can say, 'We like it Spike, let's shoot the pilot.'"
According to Deadline, the original film starred Tracy Camilla Johns as a young socialite navigating her relationships with three lovers in Brooklyn. The movie gained over $7 million at the U.S. box office off of a budget of only $175,000.
The contemporary She’s Gotta Have It will explore the same dynamics of gender, race, and gentrification as its predecessor.
Lee is also developing a follow up to his film 1988 School Daze about historically black universities.
