Ryan Gosling premieres ‘Lost River’ at Cannes Film Festival

On Tuesday, Ryan Gosling premiered Lost River, his directorial debut at the Cannes Film Festival.

Gosling wrote and directed the film about a single mother who is drawn into a dark underworld and discovers a forbidden town. The movie stars Christina Hendricks as the single mother. Saoirse Ronan and Eva Mendes are also in the film. The movie is set in the ruins of Detroit, according to the Associated Press. The film discusses financial collapse. Sections of it take place in an underwater, dream-like place, according to The Telegraph.

Writer Eric Kohn of Indiewire, said the film, “is unquestionably a visionary journey through recent arthouse cinema more than a grand political statement, but it never manages to head in a compelling direction.”

Gosling is primarily known as an actor and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor for Half Nelson. Gosling has also appeared in Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Place Beyond the Pines, and Only God Forgives.
