Pennsylvania has become the fourth state in three weeks to rule that a ban on same sex marriage was unconstitutional.
According to USA Today, Judge John E. Jones III ‘s ruling came after couples had sued for the right to marry in the state in July. Pennsylvania would become the last state in the Northeast to allow gay couples to wed. The decision could still go through the appeals process.
NBC News reported the judge as stating, “The issue we resolve today is a divisive one. Some of our citizens are made uncomfortable by the notion of same-sex marriage. However, that same-sex marriage causes discomfort in some does not make its prohibition constitutional.”
While the attorney general for Pennsylvania reportedly decided not to defend the law, Governor Tom Corbett’s administration decided to take over the law’s defense, USA Today also reported.
Other states have also turned over the ruling of same-sex marriages being unconstitutional, including Idaho, Arkansas, and most recently Oregon.
Oregon became the 18th state to allow same-sex marriage and now Pennsylvania has been added to the list. According to NBC News, Pennsylvania’s ruling means 44% of the population live in states where same-sex marriage is allowed.
