Nia Vardalos has confirmed that she is working on a sequel for the 2002 box office hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The story will follow the hilariously loving Portokalos family as they reveal a huge secret and will rely on another big, fat, Greek wedding to bring them back together again.
Vardalos confirmed the sequel Tuesday via Twitter. She tweeted, “I'm working on the MBFG Wedding sequel; now that I'm experiencing motherhood I feel ready to write this next chapter.”
Verdalos also said that “the entire big fat family” is invited back for the new film. She will return to her role as a first-generation Greek-American woman, and John Corbett will return as the non-Greek who fell in love with her.
Vardalos told Mashable, Mashable “I don’t want to direct because I like an impartial set of eyeballs watching and editing. Plus, I’d like to become a better actor and that’s only possible with someone prodding me.”
Verdalos also joked on Twitter, “Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim that I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. On of these things is true.”
In an interview with the Huffington Post The Huffington Post in April of 2013, Vardalos talked about the biggest challenge of being a working filmmaker and mother. She said, “Balance. It believe that if I come home from a stressful day on the set, I just have to leave it there.”
Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman will return as producers. Verdalos in currently in the middle of a book tour for her best-seller Instant Mom.
