A man in Massachusetts was charged on Friday with obstructing the investigation into Boston Marathon bombings.
According to the Associated Press, Khairullozhon Matanov, 23, was arrested by FBI agents early in the morning. Police officers in Quincy also assisted with the arrests.
Matanov was booked at the Quincy Police Department before his arraignment on Friday in a U.S. District Court. He was charged with three counts of “lying to officials in a terrorism investigation,” according to Reuters. Attorneys said that Matanov also “destroyed, altered, and falsified records” in a federal investigation.
Matalov knew Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev who are accused of making the bombs that killed three people and injured over 260 others at the finish line. Authorities said that Matanov expressed support for the bombings, but changed his attitude toward the incident a week later. Prosecutors also said that Matanov tried to contact the Tsarnaevs after he learned from the news media that they were the bombing suspects.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to 30l federal charges. He is currently awaiting trial. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was killed during a gunbattle.
