Disney's live-action Maleficent has started off the weekend at the domestic box office respectably, easily dominating over other other new wide release A Million Ways to Die in the West.
The Angelina Jolie-led film opened in 3,000 theaters Thursday night and grossed $4.2 million domestically, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That number is double the $2 million Disney's 2013 live-action film Oz the Great ad Powerful grossed.
Maleficent also opened up overseas in Russia, Australia, the U.K. and a few other territories on Wednesday and earned an additional $20.1 million.
The film should easily place Jolie on top of the box office for the weekend, displacing X-Men: Days of Future Past, and projections have the expensive $180 million fantasy reaching about between $55 million and $60 million, which would be a decent enough start, though not spectacular.
The latest X-Men adventure will likely earn about $40 million on the weekend, which would be good enough for a distant second place.
Seth MacFarlane's R-rated Western Million Ways to Die earned only $891,000 in its Thursday night previews and the comedy is projected to earn about $25 million. That would be disappointing in comparison to 2012's Ted, which grossed $54.4 million, but MacFarlane's second film, which also stars Charlize Theron and Liam Neeson, only cost $40 million to make.
