President Barack Obama announced on Friday that the Obama administration's longtime spokesman, Jay Carney, resigned as press secretary.
Obama revealed that Carney expressed his intention to step away back in April. "I was not thrilled, to say the least." According to NBC News, the president added, "But Jay has had to wrestle with this decision for quite some time."
Obama said that Carney hasn't quite figured out his next move yet only saying that the former spokesman planned on spending "as much of his summer as he can with his kids before he decides what's next for him."
Josh Earnest, who was serving as the deputy press secretary, will replace Carney, The New York Times reports. The president said Earnest has "sound judgment and a great temperament."
Earnest has been with Obama since 2008 as he helped work on the president's first campaign and often would step in for Carney when the press secretary was unable to talk to the press in the briefing room.
The timing of the announcement comes shortly after Veterans Affairs secretary Eric Shinseki announced he would be stepping down over the VA wait times scandal.
