Four U.K. artists nominated for presitgious Turner Prize

The nominees for the Turner Prize have been announced. Duncan Campbell, James Richards, Ciara Phillips, and Tris Vonna-Michell have been nominated.

The prestigious award is given to a British or British-based artist under 50 for outstanding work in the previous 12 months. This is the 30th anniversary year.

According to the Telegraph, Tate Britain director Penelope Curtis, who chairs the Turner Prize jury, said, "The four shortlisted artists share a strong international presence and an ability to adapt, restage, and reinterpret their own and others' works, very often working in collaborative social contexts."

Curtis led the juries for the competition. She said that none of the four finalists were a household name. She also mentioned that the competition was “a chance to bring out some of the smaller names that the art world has been talking about to a wider public," according to the Associated Press.

Campbell is nominated for his film that has screened at the Venice Biennale. Vonna-Michell blends recorded images and sound with live performance. Phillips used craft techniques, and Richards is nominated for a black and white film.

The award was founded in 1984. The winner will be announced on December 1.
