Oscar-nominated British screenwriter Steven Knight has been picked by Paramount and Skydance to write the sequel to World War Z, which will star Brad Pitt.
Knight’s hiring was first reported by Variety. The plot details for the sequel aren’t known, since the first World War Z got an ending that did tidy up the story, since Paramount was nervous that the film wouldn’t be the smash hit it turned out to be. However, there was definitely some room to continue the story outlined in the Max Brooks novel that the film was based on.
Impossible director Juan Antonio Bayona is still set to direct, although his A Monster Calls commitment means that the studio has some time to let Knight put the script together.
Pitt will star and produce again under his Plan B shingle with Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner. The original film made $540 million last year, making it the highest-grossing film in Pitt’s long career. It was directed by Marc Forster.
Knight just directed the acclaimed Locke with Tom Hardy. He has an Oscar nomination on his resume for Dirty Pretty Things. The Eastern Promises writer is also working on a World War II romance story that Pitt has been linked to. It currently does not have a distributor.
