Amazon looking to add music streaming service, but there's a catch (Report)

There is no sector of the entertainment industry that Amazon does not have an interest in, so it should be no surprise to hear that the Internet retail giant is still interested in launching a music streaming service. However, there is one catch - it won’t feature new music.

A new Buzzfeed report claims that the service could launch as soon as next month or in July. It would be an added part of the Amazon Prime membership, which just went up in price in March.

While that sounds great, it will launch with music that is no newer than six-months-old. That’s in stark contrast to Spotify and other services that have most new music available when it’s released.

Of course, that may not matter for some, since they would get all the other features of the $99-a-year Amazon Prime membership. You also get access to Amazon Instant Prime Video, which now includes HBO programming and free two-day shipping for any item on the site. Amazon currently says it has 20 million Prime Subscribers.

Buzzfeed reports that Amazon has already secured deals with Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group, but it’s not clear if it does have a deal with Universal Music Group yet. The music that will be available will be based on Amazon customer habits, but again, it won’t include released in the past six months.

It was also reported back in February that Amazon was looking to start its own streaming service. Amazon did not comment at the time.

Obviously, the streaming service sector is exploding at the moment. Apple just bought Beats Music in a $3 billion deal and Spotify just said that it now has 10 million paid subscribers worldwide.
