‘Orphan Black’ Season 2 Recap and Review: "Ipsa Scientia Potestas Est"

Rachel goes on the warpath, lashing out at Sarah's nearest and dearest. While she tries to keep her loved ones safe, an unexpected visitor threatens to derail Sarah's plans.

Sarah’s and Cosima’s Plot Line

Sarah and Cosima were essential to this episode. After Helena saved Sarah, Sarah takes her to Felix’s place to clean up and prepare her for a meeting with Art. Felix is tasked with taking Cosima to Art. Then Sarah uses Felix’s computer to chat with Kira and Cal at a local pub. We learn that Kira and Cal have bounded and Kira has revealed that Sarah has sisters that looked like her.

Meanwhile, Cosima and Delphine continue to work on a cure for her (Cosima’s) lung disease. The two find out that Dr. Leekie has been working on experimental stem-cell research. As the two searches for answers in his office, Dr. Leekie appears. He tells them that the original genome that was responsible for creating Cosima is gone in a fire. Even though Rachel told Leekie to shut down the program, he plans on helping Cosima anyway. Cosima invites Leekie for drinks.

The Wrap Up

There were a lot of developments in this episode. We learn that the Proletheans (Hank Johansson) have looked up Grace because they believe she help Helena escape. We see that her lips are sown together. Hank and his wife charge Grace with retrieving Helena. If she fails, Grace will carry Helena’s child.

In other news, Rachel has a new monitor. She has decided to make Paul her personal sex toy and servant. His first order of business involved Felix. Paul (with cops in hand) goes over to Felix’s apartment while Felix was in the middle of a hot date. He takes out a murder weapon and force Felix to put his finger prints on the gun. Sarah manages to see this and turn away. Then Paul calls Sarah and demands that she gives up or Felix goes down for a murder he did not do.

Meanwhile, Art tries to get information out of Helena. Helena tells Art about a locker in the city that Maggie Chan had. When Art gives Helena some food, she manages to unlock her handcuffs by using a sardine can tab. Sarah makes her way over to Art in order to save Felix but She ends up having to save Rachel.

Art and Sarah head over to the locker. They discover that Ethan Duncan (the Project Leda scientist) is alive. Art and Sarah follow Helena and prevent her from killing Rachel and Paul.

In the end of the episode, Sarah meets with Dr. Leekie in a bar. Dr. Leekie reveals that Cosima is sick and Sarah did not know anything about it. Sarah manages to strike a deal with him, offering to bring Ethan Duncan to Rachel in order to free Felix.

Review

Overall, I like what this episode establishes. Here’s the thing: Alison is the weak link in this season. I like Alison and she is fun but, she does not drive the story into interesting directions. This episode is proof of that. Helena and Sarah are connecting and acting like real sisters. These two clones are the action girls of the series and it makes sense to have those two get closer. Art has gained an elevated role and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Art, Felix, Cosima, Sarah and Helena working as a team have a helluva lot of potential. It is also interesting that Dr. Leekie has openly defied Rachel. That may be something to keep an eye out on because we get that Rachel really does control everything. This may have been one of the top five episodes of the entire series. Orphan Black airs on BBC America.
