‘Orphan Black’ Season 2 recap and review: ‘Mingling Its Own Nature With It’

After hitting the road with Felix, Sarah is forced to turn to a ghost from her past -- an old flame named Cal Morison. When their brief respite is brutally shattered, Sarah realizes that no matter how far she runs, it will never be far enough.

Sarah’s Plot Line

Sarah, Kira, and Felix are trying to find a new place to settle down. They come by a convenient store and stage a quick robbery by using Kira as bait. Then they happen to find a photographer’s cabin and stay the night. This event in the episode is strange because the cabin’s owner, Cal, is revealed to be Kira’s father. Felix feels left out so he returns to Allison’s side to see her perform in the play.

Cal and Sarah reconnect but as everything begin to get better; one of Rachel’s men tracks down Cal’s cabin. Rachel’s henchman was examining Ms. S’ hideout. Hank (the leader of the Prolethean farmers) and his assistant burns down the house. We find out that the lady named Brenda was working for them. Ms. S prevented anything from happening. Rachel’s henchmen fails in taking Kira but he manages to take Sarah. Her story ends when a truck crashes into the passenger door.

Cosima’s Plot Line

Cosima is still dealing with her illness. So, Delphine shows Cosima a number of video journals of another clone named Jennifer Fitzsimmons. Jennifer has the same ailment as Cosima and died from it. We get to see Jennifer as Delphine and Cosima examine her body to figure out what they can do to save Cosima.

Allison’s Plot Line

Angie decides to do some undercover work and spy on Allison. However, Allison does not fall for this. She believed that Angie was another monitor but by the end of the episode Angie reveals to Allison that she is a cop. Allison refuses to tell her anything about Sarah in comedic fashion.

On the other hand, Allison really is distraught about Aynsley’s death. She takes to drinking and gets drunk right before the play even though Felix is there in the audience. During the show, she is clearly drunk and dazed so she falls off stage in comedic fashion.

The Wrap Up

The major developments in this episode happened around Helena and Art. Art has been tracking the Proletheans for some time now. He manages to find their farm and will investigate further next week. Helena in this episode gets married to Hank, the leader of the group. Hank’s daughter Grace hates the idea but she remains relatively mute on the point. Grace may become an interesting character this season.

Review

This was a fine episode but it was probably the weakest of the season thus far because the scenes with Sarah dragged on too long. We didn’t get a lot of time with Helena, even though her plot line was the most interesting. The new characters introduced are intriguing but again they just don’t get enough screen time. The problem with adding more characters is that a one –hour- show is not enough time to develop them. I think that this episode made Felix into a fully realized character. He is more than a lap dog that is willing to help at a drop of a dime. With all of that said, I think that next week’s episode will be explosive. This episode has stage some new developments. Orphan Black airs on BBC America.
