If William Shakespeare was alive today, he would be 450 years old. Also, he would be shocked to see how many adaptations of his work exist today. If you are not a literature buff, you will be surprised to see how many films, plays, or television shows you watched that were inspired by him. In a way, Shakespeare is responsible for some of our entertainment today. It is a known fact that many industries take elements from each other to make something new. For a writer, numerous adaptations are the biggest form of flattery. Others are able to take your work to a place you did not think to go. New life is born from your original idea. If you have watched some of these productions before, I challenge you to read Shakespeare’s work. When you are done, go back and watch it again. See what themes stand out to you.

[New Page=8. O]

O is not a suitable movie for a young audience. O is the modern adaptation of Othello. If you read or watched the play, there are risqué scenes and violence in this movie.
[New Page=7. She’s The Man]
7. She’s The Man
This Twelfth Night adaptation stars Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum! The film is filled with many awkward and suggestive scenes between Viola (Amanda Bynes) and Duke (Channing Tatum). If that wasn’t enough, Duke’s crush Olivia is attracted to Viola, who is pretending to be Sebastian. Can you say, “Awkward love triangle!” It should be a square, but Amanda Bynes is the man.

Our first Macbeth adaptation is an independent film. You can catch it on the Sundance Chanel. It also falls into the parody realm, because it is a dark comedy.
[New Page=2. Romeo Must Die]
2. Romeo Must Die
You are right to assume this modern adaptation is Romeo and Juliet. Romeo Must Die focuses on gangs more so than race. These are competing gangs trying to seize more control of the territory. Race seems to be an after-thought. Jet Lee and Aaliyah do not hit it off right away, which is not typical for a Romeo and Juliet Adaptation. Both are looking into the deaths of their brothers.
[New Page=1. West Side Story]
1. West Side Story
