It has been announced that entertainer and entrepreneur Sean Combs, also known as Diddy or Puff Daddy, will give the commencement speech this year to Howard University’s graduating class.
Combs attended Howard in the late 1980’s and never officially graduated, so the University has decided to allow him to give the commencement speech and receive an honorary degree. Combs dropped out in order to pursue his dreams of music.
Huffington Post reports that the school announced earlier today that Combs would be one of the five people receiving honorary degrees as trailblazers in their field on May 10. The other four are CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, transplant surgeon Clive Callender, jazz legend Benny Golson and PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi.
Combs’ specific degree will be in the humanities field for eventually going on to build his own business and brand. Howard University’s president, Wayne Frederick, says that Combs’ entrepreneurial spirit was sparked at this school.
According to The Washington Post, Frederick spoke in a news release saying, “We are honored to have Mr. Combs serve as our speaker. He sat in our classrooms where our student sit, walked ‘The Yard,’ and like many students, his entrepreneurial spirit was sparked at Howard.”
Howard University has had some major celebrities as their graduation speakers. Others include Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell and Maya Angelou.
