Hip-hop’s Rodney Bryce, also known as DJ E-Z Rock, passed away Sunday at the age of 46. He’s best known for being in the hip-hop duo Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock with their track “It Takes Two.”
Rob Base’s spokesperson confirmed to Rolling Stone that the Harlem Rapper died on Sunday and the cause of his death has not been revealed yet.
The duo’s first single, “DJ Interview,” was released in 1986 but their hit song “It Takes Two” is what really let them rise to fame in 1988. It was a blend between hip-hop and house music and was loved nationwide. It peaked at Number 3 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Songs chart that year as well as Rolling Stone’s Top 50 Hip Hop Songs of All Time.
Other stars like Snoop Dogg and Girl Talk have made samples of the track and it has even been featured in many movie soundtracks, including Sandra Bullocks and Ryan Reynolds’ The Proposal.
NY Daily News reports that many hip-hop artists sent their condolences on social media. Biz Markie, known for his hit song “Just A Friend,” was the first to release the news on Twitter. He wrote, “R.I.P to EZ Rock from Rob Base and EZ Rock you will be truly missed.”
DJ Scratch posted a picture of the duo from the late 80’s to his Instagram and DJ Red Alert tweeted “We have lost our very own from Harlem NYC & the hip-hop culture our brother DJ EZ Rock. Rest in peace.” He will be missed.
