Despite new releases from Iggy Azalea and Future, the soundtrack to Disney’s Frozen kept its hold on the Billboard 200 album chart. The album sold well over 100,000 copies, almost double what Future sold.
Frozen topped the Billboard chart with 115,000 copies, marking its 12th non-consecutive week at No. 1. However, that was down 56 percent from the previous week, when it sold 259,000 copies. This is only the eighth album to notch 12 weeks at No. 1 since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard in 1991.
It’s worth noting that Frozen has sold 2.1 million copies in 2014 alone and 2.5 million in total since its release last fall. While it took six months for 2013 to have a 2 million seller (Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience), Rolling Stone notes that Nielsen has reported that album sales are down 16 percent from 2013 in total. That just makes Frozen’s dominance of the music industry look even more astounding.
Future’s Honest reached No. 2 with just 53,000 copies sold. It’s actually much better than his first release, Pluto, which sold 41,000 copies in its first week in 2012. Azalea’s The New Classic came in a close third with 52,000 copies sold.
Pharrell Williams’ G I R L jumped to No. 4 with an anemic 21,000 copies. August Alsina’s Testimony fell to No. 5 with 20,000 copies.
The rest of the top 10 looks weak. Pop Psychology from Neon Trees sold 19,000 copies, but that was good enough for a No. 6 slot. Crash My Party from Luke Bryan also sold around 19,000 copies. Nashville: On the Record sold 18,000 copies and Lorde’s Pure Heroine added 16,000. You Make Me Brave: Live at the Civic/i> from Bethel Music sold 14,000 copies. That’s the lowest sales number for a No. 10 album since 1991.
“Happy” from Williams is No. 1 on the Digital Songs Chart with 208,000 downloads.
