Earthquake with 7.6 magnitude hits near Solomon Islands

Near the Solomon Islands, a powerful earthquake struck. The magnitude was measured at a dangerous 7.6 level. This earthquake triggered a tsunami warning, but the warning was later cancelled.

The Solomon Islands centers around the "Ring of Fire," which is an arc of volcanic activity that centers around the Pacific Rim.

According to Reuters, the earthquake hit 60 miles south of Kira Kira on the island of Makira. Despite the high level, there have been no reports of damage or injuries so far as stated by Constable Taylor Fugo of the Kira Kira police. The depth of the earthquake reached 18 miles.

There was an earlier tsunami watch for Australia, Indonesia and Fiji. The warning was cancelled though after the earthquake magnitude was lowered from its initial 8.3 level. There were aftershocks, and the strongest one reached 5.9.

According to FOX News, the Pacific Tsunami Center said that the earthquake was powerful to generate a tsunami, but it was not known if it actually did.
