Former Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson has signed with the New York Jets. It’s a two-year deal that worth up to $9 million.
According to USA Today, the deal has a base value of $8 million and $1 million in incentives. Johnson was released by the Titans on April 7. He passed his physical before he was released. The Titans had tried to trade Johnson but weren’t able to do so. The Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, and Buffalo Bills were interested in Johnson in addition to the Jets.
"I've always been a big fan of the Jets," Johnson told the Jets website. "There was some thought into this, but just at the end of the day, I was comfortable here. I just felt like it was the right situation."
He went on to add, "I see this as a team on the rise. This is a winning team. They didn't make the playoffs last year but I think they were a game out of the playoffs with a rookie quarterback. So I feel like this is a team that can do some good things."
Johnson was with the Titans for six years. He has become one of the best running backs in the NFL. Last year he had 1,077 yards, which is the second-lowest total of his career, and a 3.9 yard average, which is a career-worst, according to Fox Sports. He is the sixth player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his first six years.
One concern for the Jets is Johnson’s health. He had surgery in January to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. One month ago he began running again. He should be ready to play when the season begins and the Jets hope that he can perform well.
