'Captain America' sequel beats out 'Rio 2' to stay atop the box office

Captain America: The Winter Soldier narrowly beat out Rio 2 in box office sales to stay on top of the charts. It made $41.4 million it's second weekend after making $96.2 million opening weekend, which set a record for April weekends.

The sequel is already close to beating its predecessor in box office sales. The first Captain America film made $176.6 million when it was released in 2011.

According to the LA Times, Rio 2 made $39 million in its opening weekend, but was projected to gross between $40 million and $45 million. It received mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes with 51 percent being favorable.

Oculus, a low-budget horror film, reached the No. 3 spot with $12 million as reported by Reuters.

Draft Day, starring Kevin Costner, finished fourth by grossing $9.75 million. This is a film about a fictional Cleveland Browns general manager who juggles between turning around the Browns franchise and his personal life.

Rounding out the top five is Divergent with $7.5 million in sales.
