The Seattle Symphony will be joined by a special guest this summer, Sir-Mix-a-Lot, as they perform a new orchestra version of the rappers hit, “Baby Got Back.”
The new piece will be a part of a series titled, Sonic Evolution, which involves music inspired from Seattle musiciains such as Alice in Chains, Kurt Cobain, Quincy Jones and Jimi Hendrix.
The hit rap song was written by composer and DJ, Gabriel Prokofiev, founded the Nonclassical record label and is the great grandson of Sergei Prokofiev, reports Rolling Stone.
Gabriel Prokofiev, a London-based composer and DJ, wrote the Sir Mix-a-Lot piece. He’s also the founder of the record label Nonclassical and the great grandson of the Russian composer, Sergei Prokofiev.
"He's got this rap persona but in reality he's the softest; he's only interested in mixing. His most famous hit is 'Baby Got Back' which starts, "I like Big Butts..." and so I'm doing a new piece based on the rhythms of his raps," said Prokofiev, according to The Quietus.
The Sir Mix-a lot and Prokofiev collaboration will premiere at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall on June 6th. Ludovic Morlot will be the conductor of the night and will include a performance by and indie band called Pickwick and work from Bill Frisell and Ray Charles.
