100 people arrested in Southern California college party chaos

Deltopia, an annual college spring break party held in Isla Vista, Calif., spiraled out of control on Saturday when 100 people were arrested. At least 44 people were taken to the hospital as well. About 15,000 people attended this event. It mostly consisted of UC Santa Barbara students and students from other local colleges.

The Associated Press reports that a street brawl broke out around 9:30 p.m.

The fight escalated when a Santa Barbara County police officer was hit in the head by a backpack. The backpack had bottles of alcohol inside of it.

After the brawl heated up, people began throwing rocks, bricks and bottles at police officers. This caused damage to police cars, and fires were started.

These actions injured five officers, and one was hit in the head by a brick, according to ABC Local.

The officers used tear gas and pepper spray to calm the crowd down. They finally managed to stop the riots around 1 a.m.
