After Crimea declared its independence from the Ukraine, thousands of men from the Ukraine stood guard on the peninsula waiting for orders from Kiev that could change their families’ lives.
Military men that have served the Ukraine under a promised oath are facing the decision to stand with their native country-the Ukraine or to leave their post and to serve under the Russian army.
Col. Igor Bedzay, the unit commander, said in an interview that, "Our fate is in limbo and our lives may be hanging in the balance too. We are men of orders and discipline and we'd rather fulfill any order given by our commanders than take our own decision now,” according to LA Times .
In a statement made by the State Duma, the legislators said, “As it hails the will of the people of Crimea expressed in the March 16, 2014 referendum in favour of including the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol in the Russian Federation, the State Duma proceeds from the understanding that the bodies of state power operating in Crimea’s territory shall be supporting inter-confessional accord and language diversity in the republic,” and that it promises to promote the well-being and economic status of Crimea, according to ITAR-TASS News Agency.
Russia has given the service men three options and will have until Friday to make their decision. The three options include quitting the service and leave, return to the Ukraine, or to join the Russian military.
