At the Academy Awards, filmmakers from the UK had a great evening, with victories in several categories including Best Picture.
According to the Associated Press, British Film Institute chief executive Amanda Nevill said, "Creatively and technically, British filmmaking is at the top of its game."
The British Film Institute distributes money to filmmakers. The Institute is funded by the government. It looks long term to find films and filmmakers that might be a cut above the rest.
Among the best and the brightest were British director Malcolm Clarke who won in the documentary category for The Lady in Number 6. Steven Price took home an Oscar for his score for Gravity. Gravity was made in London, using British special effects teams. Producer Steve McQueen took home the Academy Award for Best Picture for 12 Years a Slave, according to Reuters. Of course, actresses like Judi Dench and Sally Hawkins made a strong showing, in terms of nominations.
The 86th Annual Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre. The ceremony was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.
