Nick Cannon hit with backlash for using 'whiteface' to promote new album

Nick Cannon sparked controversy when he posted a picture of himself as a Caucasian person with the use of “Whiteface”.

Cannon used the make up to transform into “Connor Smallnut”, a character that he was playing for his new album White People Party Music.

Many observers called Cannon out, and he fired back with, “It’s funny how people take themselves so seriously. People love drama! We feed off of it. Just relax and have fun!!” in a tweet, according to E Online.

The America’s Got Talent host continued to banter with other tweeters, and then dared them to trying wearing “Blackface.”

In an interview with US Weekly’s entertainment director Ian Drew, Cannon explained why his album had the name it had. He said, “You go to a party and white people are having more fun than anybody. They know how to have a good time! I could have named the album Purple People Party Music and you'd still get the same album, but it was just one of those things. You know, you deal with things like race, and people get uptight, so why not?”

Cannon’s White People Party Music will be released in stores on April 1.
