Minnesota Twins top prospect Miguel Sano will not play in the 2014 season because he will undergo Tommy John surgery to heal his injured right elbow.
According to ESPN, Sano tweaked his elbow from throwing on Thursday. He was participating in an intrasquad game.
This is a big blow to the Twins' future since Sano was ranked No. 6 by Baseball America's prospect rankings, according to Yahoo! Sports. Sano was expected to compete for an Opening Day roster spot.
Sano had already hurt his elbow in November playing winter ball. He was diagnosed with a strained ulnar collateral ligament, but he was cleared for spring training. Tweaking his elbow aggravated the injury, and he was left with no choice but to have surgery.
The 20-year-old power-hitting third baseman had a huge 2013 season by hitting 35 home runs in 123 games. He battled an elbow injury during the season. He claimed that he could hit between 45 and 55 home runs this year, and he said that he feels pretty frustrated with having to sit out the season.
