Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges and newcomer Brenton Thwaites star in first 'The Giver' trailer

Lois Lowry's groundbreaking 1993 novel, which paved the way for similar dystopian young adult fiction, is finally getting a big screen adaptation and the first trailer was released on Wednesday.
The Giver stars Brenton Thwaites as Jonas, a young man who is chosen to carry a great burden and begins to see the world around him in a new light. Thwaites, who is 24, will be playing a 16 year old Jonas unlike the 12 year old in the book, according to Today who first aired the trailer.
Entertainment Weekly notes that the film has been in development hell for over 15 years. Jeff Bridges, who plays Jonas' mentor and the titular Giver, has been attached to the film since the 90's when he bought the rights with his now late father Lloyd in mind for the role. In the trailer Bridges warns Jonas and the audience that he "can not prepare you for what's about to happen."
A villainous Meryl Streep plays the antagonist Chief Elder, along with Katie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgard as Jonas' parents.

The Giver will be released August 15.
