The Los Angeles Kings acquired right wing Marian Gaborik in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, just before the trade deadline. The Blue Jackets get right wing Matt Frattin and two conditional picks, while the Kings also get defenseman Brayden McNabb and a second round pick in the 2014 and 2015 NHL draft.
This is the second year in a row that Gaborik has been traded. He was traded by the New York Rangers to the Blue Jackets last year. Gaborik will be a free agent at the end of the season. He was making $7.5 million a year with the Blue Jackets, and has $1.9 million in salary left, which the Blue Jackets will pick up a portion of, according to the Associated Press.
Gaborik has missed 39 games this season due to injuries. In just 22 games he has six goals and eight assists, while Frattin has two goals in 40 games, according to Fox Sports. In 13 seasons with the Minnesota Wild, Rangers, and Blue Jackets Gaborik has 342 career goals and 688 points.
Both the Kings and Blue Jackets are in the playoff picture. The Kings have won five straight games and enter Thursday’s game in third place in the Pacific Division. They are seven points behind the Phoenix Coyotes. The Blue Jackets are tied for third in the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division and have the final playoff qualifying spot entering Wednesday’s game.
