John Mayer has spent a massive amount of money on authentic Rolex watches, but is now claiming that he was betrayed. He is suing Robert Maron, who is Charlie Sheen’s best friend, for selling him fake watches.
The 36-year-old singer loves collecting watches and TMZ reports that he spent $5 million on what he thought were real, antique Rolex watches. He met Maron, 54, back in 2007, telling him he was looking for some rare Rolexes to add to his collection.
He bought plenty of watches from Maron and never questioned their value until he took them to a manufacturer for repair in 2010 to which Rolex replied, “The watch was not authentic in all respects.” Maron admitted that the manufacturers were right, but called it an “isolated event” and gave Mayer back his money.
A year later, Rolex confirmed to Mayer that at least seven of the watches he obtained from Maron are counterfeit. He is satisfied with the other watches he purchased from Maron, but is asking for a $656,000 refund for the seven that contain these fake parts. This large amount of money also includes interest and damages for five causes of action, including fraud, breach of oral contract and negligent misrepresentation.
Hollywood Reporter reports that a complaint was filed on Tuesday in California Superior Court. It identifies Maron as a broker and expert on “important” watches. Maron has become Mayer’s “close and trusted personal friend” and the two have even gone on some vacations together. In a statement, Maron’s attorney, Eric George, called the lawsuit “factually meritless.”
George continued to say, “Robert Maron has a more than 30 year reputation as an internationally renowned watch dealer. John Mayer, who briefly claimed expertise in Rolexes but now has apparently changed his mind, has brought a lawsuit that is legally and factually meritless.”
Charlie Sheen, who is Maron’s good friend and has bought over $10,000,000 in watches from him, says that, “He has incredible taste. He’s the most astute player in the game. He truly is, in my opinion, the market maker.”
Maron is refusing to pay Mayer the money he is asking for and will instead be fighting the lawsuit in court on a later date.
