Great white shark crosses Atlantic ocean for first time

Lydia, a tagged great white shark, became the first great white to swim across the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday.

The shark comes in at a staggering 2,000 pounds. According to GrindTV, the female shark was tagged back in March of 2013 off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida.

She has traveled over 19,000 miles since she has been tagged. As she heads for Europe, scientists are speculating her destination. She could potentially be headed to the Mediterranean Sea or the coast of Africa.

After she spent a prolonged period of time in the cold waters of Canada, the shark finally began heading east towards the coast of Northern Europe.

Back on March 4, 2013, the Huffington Post reported that Lydia, along with three other great white sharks, had been tagged by Osearch scientists to track and study their movements throughout the ocean.

They also reported that Lydia was the first great white to be captured, tagged and released off the southeastern coast of the US.

Osearch is a nonprofit organization that specializes in shark research and is trying to spread the message about the shark’s declining population.
