On April 10, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be conducting its next induction ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. However, while the original members of KISS will be inducted, KISS will not be performing.
Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have refused to perform to protest against the decision of that only the original members of the band will be inducted. The former band members, Peter “Catman” Criss and Ace “Space-Ace” Frehley, will be inducted while Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer go unmentioned.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Simmons called into Entertainment Weekly Radio where he discussed his decision.
Simmons explained that he and Stanley decided to call former members Frehley and Criss to notify them about the induction and to say congratulations. They continued to say that it was an honor to be playing together years ago, and it would be an honor to stand alongside them again to accept the award. Everyone was gracious and happy when they parted ways.
However, when they found out that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would only be honoring Simmons, Stanley, Frehley and Criss, Simmons had an issue.
“Oh okay, then we won’t be playing there,” Simmons told the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame according to Entertainment Weekly. “We’ll just accept the award. Thank you very much.”
The representatives didn’t quite understand why the band had so quickly changed his mind about performing. Simmons was willing to explain it to Entertainment Weekly Radio.
“Well, you have a group like the Eagles who continue to be our contemporaries…and every member that has even been in the Eagles has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But you’re only gonna honor the first lineup that was together for seven years? We’ve been around forty years,” Simmons explained.
“Tommy and Eric have been in the band 20 years — two and a half times longer than Ace and Peter. You’re going to slap them in the face and we’re supposed to get you a sandwich and make sure you burp at 9 o’clock at night and get up on stage and do it? No, that’s not going to happen.’”
