Detroit Tigers win opener 4-3 against Kansas City Royals on walk-off hit

The Detroit Tigers defeated their American League Central rival, the Kansas City Royals, in a close opener 4-3.

Justin Verlander took the mound for the Tigers for his seventh consecutive Opening Day start, according to Detroit Free Press. James Shields made the start for the Royals. They each put together solid starts but came away with no-decisions since the game was tied in the ninth inning.

Shortstop Alex Gonzalez led the way for the Tigers by hitting 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. He proved to be clutch as he hit a game-tying triple in the seventh before driving in the game-winning run on a walk-off single, according to ESPN.

Catcher Victor Martinez hit a solo home run for the Tigers. Catcher Salvador Perez led the Royals with a 4-for-4 effort and drove in a run.

Joe Nathan got the win for the Tigers, and Wade Davis took the loss for the Royals after closer Greg Holland allowed an inherited runner to score the winning run.
