The building housing the Cotes-a-Cotes Grill dates back to the 1600s, yet this Quebec restaurant is anything but dated. The zebra decor was tastefully done and it actually complements the historic site very well. It doesn’t hurt that the location is excellent with astounding views of the Chateau Frontenac and St. Lawrence River. Although the view in winter was lovely the summer must be even better with more people out and about.
The appetizers were a promising start to what would become a wonderful meal. We sampled the basil and chardonnay cheddar fondant with apricot chutney. The chutney was a nice balance to the sharpness of the cheese. The maple and chipotle wings style confit duck drumstick was amazing. It was quite possibly the best duck confit prepared the authentic way. The meat fell off the bone, and the sauce was sinfully delicious and the fried onion on top added that little crunch.
Everyone in Canada has a spin on poutine but this place takes the cake! Their baby back rib poutine with bacon and homemade gravy with a hint of Jack Daniels was an amazing blend of flavors. The combo of the sweet sauce, salty bacon and savory pulled pork was delicious.
For lunch we had the maple chipotle ribs which were the hands down favorite. It came with a side of excellent fries and accompanying mayos like curry and lemon balsamic.
Desserts are all homemade. The cocktail on the kids menu was also good, fresh tasting cherry and raspberry flavors topped with whipped cream and shaved chocolate and a cherry on top.
