The Cleveland Indians wasted no time in locking up their catcher of the future in Yan Gomes. He posted a breakout season in 2013 with 11 home runs and 38 runs batted in with a .294 batting average. He posted these numbers in just 293 at bats.
According to USA Today, Gomes must pass a physical exam to officially join the team. His contract is worth $23 million over six years, and it includes two club options.
Gomes played a major role in the Indians reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2007. He provided pop to the lineup and great defense behind the plate, throwing out 38 percent of potential base stealers.
Gomes was not eligible for arbitration until 2015, according to NBC Sports. The new deal buys out three arbitration years and a year of free agency.
With Gomes locked in at catcher, Carlos Santana is expected to remain at third base. The Indians will look to dethrone the Detroit Tigers as American League Central champions and return to the playoffs.
