The Cleveland Browns released wide receiver Davone Bess on Wednesday.
Bass has not had a good offseason. In January he was arrested for assaulting a law enforcement officer at an airport in Florida and other bizarre behavior. On the field Bess didn’t have a good season also. Last season he finished with career-lows in catches (42) and yards (362), and had a lot of dropped balls that hurt the Browns, according to the Associated Press. He had two touchdowns also but missed the last two games due to personal reasons.
"I haven't talked to the Browns [front office], and I don't know how they feel about me," Bess told the Cleveland Plain Dealer last month. "I see they made changes, and change is often good. I did have communication with [offensive coordinator] Kyle Shanahan. He sent out a group message [to the offensive players] and I replied … I'm looking forward to the season and getting better on and off the field."
Bess spent the first five years of his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins. The Browns acquired him in a trade with the Dolphins last April. Right after they acquired him they signed him to a three-year, $11.5 million contract extension. The extension had $5.75 million guaranteed. Bass is owed a guaranteed $3.067 million in 2014, but the Browns could recoup some of that money because of the trouble that Bess got into in January, according to Sports Illustrated.
In addition to Bess the Browns have also released wide receiver Brian Tyms and linebacker Paul Hazel.
