Venezuelan folk singer, Simon Diaz, dies at age 85

Simon Diaz, a Venezuelan Folk Singer, died at age 85.

According to Reuters, his daughter, Bettsimar Diaz, said, "With tears in my eyes, I announce to the country that my beloved father peacefully left us this morning."

The singer was known as “Uncle Simon.” His music was described as Venezuelan plains music that features instrumentation that includes harp, maracas, and guitar. He also had a popular radio show.

Diaz recorded more than seventy albums, according to Billboard. He was awarded the “The Great Ribbon of the Liberator’s Order” by the Venezuelan state. He also holds honorary degrees by two Venezuelan universities. He was also given with a Latin Grammy for lifetime achievement in 2008.

Artists from other disciplines have embraced Diaz’s work. Choreographer Pina Busch included his songs in Nur Du. Film director Pedro Almodovar included Diaz’s song, “Tonada de Luna Llena” as part of the soundtrack for The Flower of My Secret.His work has been heard in several motion picture soundtracks including 33 revolucions and Dancing Stars.

Diaz died in his home in Caracas, Venezuela.
