Each year, Vanity Fair releases a Hollywood Issue and this year is the issues 20th anniversary. With so many amazing actors and actresses featured in films over the past year, 12 of them are on the three-fold cover. For the first time, the cover includes some diversity, which is a huge step for the magazine.
A sneak peek of this Hollywood issue was released on Monday and is breaking news all over with the diversity present in the cover. Daily News reports that for the first time since 1955, when this annual special issue began, six of the 12 actors and actresses on the cover of the issue are not white. The magazine had been hearing a lot in the past about its lack of diversity. Buzzfeed was even sure to make a point by letting it’s readers know that the 2010 issue only featured white, young and skinny actresses. This year's colored actors and actresses did phenomenal jobs in their specific films and deserve every bit of this.
12 Years A Slave star Lupita Nyong’o is front and center in a beautiful gold dress. It seems this issue is making a point to show how influential and powerful African-Americans were in several different film categories this year. Could Nyong’o’s gold dress be an assumption with the Academy Awards airing next month? Maybe, but the singer rocks this gold dress and looks amazing, so it’s most likely just that.
The three-panel fold out features Chiwetel Eijofor, Julia Roberts, Idris Elba, George Clooney, Michael B. Jordan, Jared Leto, Lupita Nyong’o, Naomie Harris, Brie Larson, Chadwick Boseman, Margot Robbie and Lea Seydoux. The twelve look absolutely stunning on this cover, which was shot by Annie Leibovitz.
The actual cover page, which is the one that will be seen on newsstands, of the three-panel spread show Chiwetel Ejiofor, Idris Elba, Julia Roberts and George Clooney. The Telegraph point that it is the first time Roberts and Clooney have been on this Hollywood issue cover. Considering the careers these two have had, this comes as quite a shock to some people.
Vanity Fair said it selected the “distinguished” group of actors to celebrate “a year in spectacular film.” The issue will hit newsstands February 11.
