This week’s column talks about a cornucopia of movies in a variety of genres. Non-Stop has Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore fighting to keep a plane in the air against an anonymous techno terrorist, Joe has Nicolas Cage playing an ex-con, who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a 15-year-old boy and Locke has Tom Hardy making imaginary phone calls as his life and mind unravels. All three movies have their own brand of action, brought about to moviegoers in different forms. Some have more action than others, some more poignancy than others but all are sure to keep audiences riveted to their plots. The era of older action heroes has arrived as well as other more familiar action heroes playing softer roles and still other stars trying their talents in different movie genres. Yet, with all three of these movies starring big name celebs, they are almost guaranteed to be fully packed on their premiere dates in theaters.
Non-Stop stars Liam Neeson as a United States Federal Marshall on a trans-Atlantic flight to London. Sometime during the flight, he gets a text message from an anonymous source that he will kill a passenger every 20 minutes unless a large sum of money is transferred to an off-shore account. Co-starring Julianne Moore, the trailer is filled with pulse-pounding action, unexpected twists and turns and amazing special effects. Neeson continues to usher in the latest movie trend: the age of the older action hero and does it brilliantly! It opens in theaters on Friday, February 28.
Joe is a film adaptation of Larry Brown's 1991 novel of the same name. Starring Nicolas Cage, this drama premiered at the 2013 Venice Film Festival with a subsequent screening at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. Cage plays Joe Ransom, an ex-con, who meets, befriends and becomes the role model to a 15-year-old boy. A story of ruin and redemption, the trailer shows Cage’s character dealing with his own inner demons while trying to protect the boy from his real life ones. Early reviews of the movie have critics saying Cage is at his best in the role. It opens in theaters on Friday, April 11.
Locke is dramatic thriller starring Tom Hardy. Hardy plays a construction manager driving from Birmingham to London. While on the road, he deals with his personal and professional problems during imaginary conversations on his cell phone with his deceased father. The trailer shows Hardy’s character, Ivan Locke, hearing his dead father’s voice as well as other people in his head as he’s driving. The creepy voiceovers and Hardy’s somber look throughout bring home the extent of his character’s inner turmoil. A truly unique thriller that will have Hardy fans clamoring to the movie’s premiere. It opens in theaters on Friday, April 25.
