John Joseph Travolta was born in Englewood, New Jersey and is one of six children from parents Helen and Salvatore Travolta. In his early years, Travolta appeared in a local production of Who'll Save the Plowboy? His mother then enrolled him in a drama school in New York, where he studied voice, dancing and acting. Travolta decided to combine all three skills and become a musical comedy performer. He landed his first professional job at 16 in the summer stock production of Bye Bye Birdie. He then quit school and moved to New York where he regularly appeared in summer stock and television commercials. When work dried up in New York, Travolta headed to Hollywood, where he appeared in minor roles in several television series. A role in the national touring company of the hit 1950s musical Grease brought him back to New York and then an opening in the New York production of Grease gave him his first Broadway role at 18. Following Grease, Travolta became a member of the company of the Broadway show Over Here, which starred The Andrews Sisters. After 10 months in that production, Travolta decided to try his luck in Hollywood one more time. Once back in Tinseltown, he had little trouble getting roles in numerous television shows such as 1969’s Medical Center and the 1972 crime drama series The Rookies. He also starred in the 1975 horror flick The Devil’s Rain. The day he returned from shooting the movie, Travolta was called to an audition for a new situation comedy series ABC was producing titled Welcome Back, Kotter. Travolta landed the role of the cocksure Vinnie Barbarino and Travolta has been on Hollywood’s radar ever since. He disappeared from Hollywood for a bit but the Look Who’s Talking films revived his career. He’s been nominated twice for the Best Actor Academy Award and shows no signs of stopping.
