Some musicians never give up. Jamie Murphy has submitted a plan to make the NYC subways more musical.
According to Rolling Stone, Murphy wrote on his “Subway Symphony” website, "Each turnstile emits its own beep, all of which are slightly out of tune with one another, creating a dissonant rubbing-Styrofoam-on-glass squeak in stations all around New York City."
Murphy says that his Subway Symphony plan would create harmony every time a commuter swipes a metro card. The turnstiles could emit a three to five tone sequence while commuters passed through. Murphy said he’s heard similar tones on the Tokyo subway and the Barcelona airport. Murphy also proposed adding the new sound chips during subway renovations. It’s unclear whether what could be dismissed as an “art project” will get off the ground. He’s started on online petition for the project, according to The Verge.
Murphy is the frontman for LCD Soundsystem, an alternative dance band in New York City. The band has previously released Sound of Silver and This is Happening. LCD Soundsystem has played at Madison Square Garden and won Grammys for Best Electronic/ Dance Album and Best Dance Recording.
